"Rainforest"

More performances of "Rainforest", a new opera by Martin Read and Philip Sealey, commissioned by Opera Minima with funding from Arts Council England and HSBC and premiered in The Old Corset Factory in June 2007.

Chico Mendes attempts to preserve the traditional and environmentally-friendly life of the rubber tappers and to halt the wilful destruction of the rainforest. He is aided by Gaia, a researcher working in the forest (who also comes to symbolise its spirit). Set against him are the forces of the capitalist world, represented by the road builders, the ranchers, the corrupt officials, and the hired killer who will eventually murder him.
This is based on the true story of Chico Mendes and his vain struggle to save a corner of the rainforest.
